in my city girl era
Growing up just an hour outside New York City, I took visits for granted. It was just something my family and I did on occasion, and as a twelve year old, it was sort of an inconvenience to my extremely exciting whirlwind of middle school life back at home. I hope you know that was a joke.
Since then, my aversion towards the crowded streets has grown into a love and appreciation for all the life that’s tightly tucked into them, in each and every corner. So why am I writing about how I’m now in my city girl era? I’ll tell you.
The other week I was given the responsibility of cat and apartment-sitting for my friend in the Upper East Side. Coming home that first night to her apartment felt honestly a little lonely. It’s weird being in a quiet apartment by yourself when there’s so much life right outside your doorstep waiting to seep through as soon as you turn the knob. As time progressed though, I found my groove and fully immersed myself into the role of twenty-something year old girl who just moved to the big city. And I absolutely loved playing the part.
I’ve always thought about the endless plot lines my life could take: living in a shack on a beach in Hawaii, ski instructor in Aspen, southern gal in Charleston… you name it. But New York City has it all. I walk out the door and there’s a multitude of storylines happening with every person I pass. Not saying I’d commit to just one singular plot line, but I think New York is one that I want to see through for quite awhile.
It’s all the little things that culminate my recently realized love for this city. It’s a morning walk in Central Park or just sitting in Central Park for hours with your best friend hung over on a Saturday. It’s trying out a new workout class all on your own surrounded by other young women, choosing the perfect playlist to match your mood for the subway ride downtown, sipping on a drink in the corner of a trendy little cocktail bar. New York truly has it all and I’m finally appreciating all its chaos now. I guess you could say my little week stay has me putting a plan in motion to move there as soon as I’m back from Spain :)
